Le manuscrit de limoges

Livre d'orgue de Limoges

(vers 1710-1725)

manuscrit inédit, conservé à la Bibliothèque municipale de Limoges.

A gift from a Limoges book collector, M. Christian Gaumy, this organ book, datind probably from the first quater of the eighteenth century, has been in the possession of the Limoges library since November 1992. It is an anonymus manuscript containing fifty-one pieces and came from the music library of a castel in the Limoges area. The quality of the writting shows that, even if he was not an organist, the copyist was familiar with music natation; the writing is flowing and clear, and there are few carrections.

At the end of the manuscript, the writer copied out a melody without text, perhaps from a motet, and another with a motet text. Two fragments of an unidentified duo, unfortunately torn, are attached to the volume.  The special inerest of this manuscript, appart from the pieces themselves, lies in the changes made on works by André Raison, and in the fact that, contrary to the practice of the period, all the works in a minor key end with a minor, not a major, chord. At the present, only thirteen of these pieces acn be attributed to composers; these are by  A. Raison, G. Julien et G. Corette.

"One of the most interesting discovery of the 50 last years!"    Michel Chapuis
A whole pieces completely remarkable, with a great musical quality and a great poetic style; i think specially at the "hymne Ave Maris Stella"    André Isoir

Extrait musical: Magnificat alterné du 2ème ton

The recording of this Manuscript is scheduled for May 2003, with alternation of Plain-chant, on the  Dom Bedos organ of Sainte Croix of Bordeaux

V.Genvrin- France Catholique
